Church Leadership: Father Nick

Fr. Nick was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in the house his grandparents built, and in which three of his five siblings were also born. His father was a minister in the Calvinist Protestant Church, into which Nick was baptized. His father’s brother was founder and moderator of the Calvinist Protestant Church, and his mother’s brother was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church. He came to Canada in 1967 with his family and his maternal grandmother.

Fr. Nick is a graduate of the University of Toronto where he received a Bachelor of Music from the Faculty of Music and a Master of Divinity from Trinity College.

Fr. Nick’s responsibilities at St. George’s include: sharing the liturgical duties with Fr. Anthony, working with the Christian Companions and visiting those who are home bound and in hospital, leading the Confirmation Class and supporting the Outreach work and Health Cabinet of St. George’s.

Music is an important part of Fr. Nick’s life, and when he has an opportunity, continues to perform oratorio, recital and operatic works. His wife Catherine Palmer, an accomplished musician and composer, is his accompanist.

Fr. Nick loves to cook, travel, garden and spend time with his family.

Christian Companions

Christian Companions is a pastoral ministry of committed women and men whose mission is: to provide companionship to those in our community who are bound to their homes, hospitals or retirement centres.

Their ministry is grounded in a personal faith and a commitment to fulfill Jesus’ commandment to love one another. Christian Companions seek to follow the example of Jesus through one-on-one caring relationships that help to address some of the basic needs of those they are companioning with, such as: listening, praying, sharing and being a presence.

Their visits are an important link between the Church and senior members of the parish who are unable to be involved with the community on a regular basis.
